Farm Technician Services

Mobility Scoring

A quarter of British dairy herds are lame at any one time. This on average costs farmers £180* per case through treatment, loss of milk sales, and reduced productivity.

To help fight this problem, Castle Vets offer a mobility scoring system in which a member of staff will come and assess your dairy cows and work together with other vets in the practice to find a solution for your farm.

Body Condition Scoring

It is very important for a dairy cow to be at the peak of condition before, during and after calving where possible. Body condition scoring is a way of deciding which cows need a bit more TLC and which cows could possibly do with losing a bit of weight! If a cow is too thin and in poor condition when she is in the dry cow period, there is greater risk of her becoming lame after she calves. This then of course creates a domino effect where more problems arise.

There are never enough hours in the day! We as a veterinary practice are very aware of this, so to make your lives a bit easier we have recently begun to offer a disbudding service to our clients, beef or dairy.

Our friendly farm technician will come out to you with all the necessary kit to perform your disbuds so all we need from you is a calf crush and the calves!
